Toilet Suites - How to choose the right one for your bathroom - Part 2: Toilet Suite Design

Once you have determined the Installation Requirements for your new toilet, you can begin to look at the design and features of the toilet. The design of the toilet suite encompasses such elements like the SUITE TYPE, STYLE, SHAPE and COLOUR.

TOILET SUITE TYPES

Toilet suites can be classified into 4 main types: CONNECTOR, CLOSE-COUPLED, WALL FACED and INWALL/INDUCT Suites.

CONNECTOR SUITES
Connector suites, also called Link Suites, get their name from the 'connector' that joins the cistern to the pan. The Cistern is attached to the wall independant of the pan and a plastic or brass pipe connects the bottom of the cistern to the back of the pan. The pipe is generally covered by a plastic cover-piece (apron) to neaten up the look of the suite. Connector suites will have a vitreous china pan and may have either a platic or vitreous china cistern.

CLOSE COUPLED SUITES
Close coupled suites has a cistern that sits directly on top of the pan. Both the cistern and pan are moulded so they connect (couple) snuggly together. They create a more integrated and robust look and are available in a wide range of designer styles. Close coupled toilets have a vitreous china pan and cistern.

WALL FACED SUITES
Wall faced suites, like close coupled suite, have the cistern fitted directly to the pan. The main difference is in the pan design. The pan extends all the way back to the wall totally enclosing the back of the toilet. The look created from this type of toilet is a modern, very streamline and easy to clean suite.
If choosing this type of toilet you need to pay particular attention to the water inlet position. Unlike connector or close coupled suites where it doesn't really matter which side the water inlet is (as the hose can be fed behind the pan to either side) Wall faced suites, due to the fully enclosed pan, will need the inlet position to correspond with the side the cistern tap is installed.
Inwall/ Indust suites has the cistern completly concealed inside the wall cavity or ceiling with only the pan visible. This type of toilet suite creates a more open and spacious look to the bathroom and are the perfect choice for small bathrooms as the pan is much shorter than a standard toilet suite. The pan can either be floor mounted or it can be wall mounted.
Inwall/ Induct suites require special installation requirement as the cistern needs to be installed before any wall linings and tiling is done. Wall hung pan will require a special metal frame to be installed inside the wall cavity to support the pan.

TOILET SUITE STYLES

Whether it's a traditional style bathroom or an ultra modern one, there is a toilet suite available to suit your bathroom decor perfectly.
Toilet Suite styles can be classified into 3 groups; Traditional, Contemporary or Modern/ European.

TRADITIONAL style suites have a more decorative design and are well suited in a heritage or colonial style bathroom.

CONTEMPORARY style suites are a more standard style suite and generally have a oval shaped bowl and rounded/ square cistern.

MODERN/ EUROPEAN style suites can have bold sharp lines or a more fluid free-from shape and have that expensive 'designer' appearance.

TOILET SUITE SHAPES

The shape the toilet suite has changed enormously over the past few years with SQUARE shaped toilets becoming increasingly more popular. Other popular shapes include ROUND geometric shapes as well as the more contemporary OVAL shape. Many suites will be a combination of round and square shapes depending on the style of bathroom you wish to create and the shape of the tapware and accessories you choose.

TOILET SUITE COLOURS

WHITE is by far the most popular and commom colour of sanitaryware, however some toilet suites are still available in such colours as IVORY and BLACK. There are some manufacturers who also offer some toilet suites in bold designer colours like LIMES, REDS and YELLOWS.
