BUILDING A NEW BATHROOM

To be able to build a new bathroom from scratch is a fantastic opportunity to have your bathroom design exactly how you want it, so seize the opportunity to do some research before the design is finalized, particular in regards to space allowance, size and the layout of the room.

The main problem most people face when building a new bathroom is that they find the perfect bath, vanity, shower system or storage idea after the plans have been finalised, only to be disappointed that the items they love won’t fit the space that has been allocated. This is the biggest nightmare for those who are renovating an existing bathroom where the size and layout can’t be changed.

By knowing what you want in the room before the plans are finished, the space, layout and size of the room can be designed around the fixtures and fittings you’ve choose.

So if you are building from scratch don’t miss this opportunity while you have it, you might regret it later.

You will also need to be aware of any council or government regulations in regards to the products you use, primarily toilets, tapware and showers as these need to comply with the WELS regulation.

As well as the main bathroom items like the bath, toilet, basin and shower, other considerations when designing your bathroom are: soundproofing, lighting – natural and artificial, ventilation and special installation requirements for your chosen bathroom products.

One of the most difficult areas of the bathroom is where to hang wet towels, make sure you allocate enough space for these. A great spot for hanging towels is on the wall behind the door, it is a very usable space that is often overlooked and very rarely designed properly, so allow enough space (about 200mm) from the wall to the door opening.

Working with a bathroom designer will help you make the most of the space available and give you insights into some great design ideas. They will also be able to help you design a bathroom that is practical, family and child friendly and environmentally efficient.
